What is CAP-e?
The CAP-e assay (Cell-based Antioxidant Protection in erythrocytes) evaluates the antioxidant potential of a substance only if the substance is able to cross the lipid bilayer cell membrane. Cell-based assays go "beyond ORAC" by determining whether the substance has true cellular bioavailability, a piece of the antioxidant puzzle not predicted by the ORAC assay. This ex vivo test used human erythrocytes (red blood cells), which are inert and therefore do not produce reactive oxygen species. The red blood cells are exposed to the antioxidant substances, oxidation is triggered by the addition of a free radical generator, and oxidative damage within the cell is measured as the relative fluorescence resulting from the reaction of reactive oxygen species and a fluorescent dye. The CAP-e data answers the question whether the antioxidants are able to enter living cells and protect the cell from ex-vivo-induced oxidation. Results with OxyPhyte® ingredients show that each ingredient has cellular bioavailability and prevents oxidation within the cell. In fact, all ingredients work better than the Quercetin, a pure antioxidant compound.
